NACAN Awards in Excellence (AIE)

1. Nominations for the 2024 NACAN AIE 

The NACAN AIE recognizes, rewards, and encourages excellence in the commitments and contributions of NACAN members. Nominations are made each year in Spring and the awards will be presented at NACAN’s Scientific Symposium in July.

 

There are 3 award categories, and unless otherwise indicated, one recipient may be selected for each category:

- Leadership/Service Award

  • Student/Postdoc member

  • Early Career member

  • Mid-Career member

  • Senior member 

- Independent Investigator Research Award

  • Early Career member

  • Mid-Career member

  • Senior member 

- Young Scholar Research Award

  • Student/Postdoc member

 

The description for each award category is listed below.

Nomination process: 

To nominate or self-nominate (which is encouraged), please send nomination information as one PDF file to nacanmembership@gmail.com by the end of June 19. The following information will be required during the submission process: 

o  Nominee Contact information

o  Nominator Contact information.

o  Letters (s) of support (maximum of 2 letters)

o  Nominee’s CV that is no more than 5 pages and emphasizes information relevant to the award category. 

 

Any current NACAN member can submit nominations.

There is no limit to the number of nominations that can be submitted from a NACAN member. 

 

Selection Process & Award Presentation:

The NACAN Ad Hoc Award Committee will serve as the selection advisory committee.

The award recipients will be recognized during NACAN’s Scientific Symposium in July. In general, NACAN AIE is given to one member per category. 

 

  • An Early career member is defined as a NACAN member who is within 5 - 7 years of first faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor or equivalent. A member who is within the first 10 years after the terminal degree can also be considered an Early Career member. 

  • A Mid-Career member is defined as a NACAN member who has between 10- and 20-year post-terminal degrees and has a sustained record of substantial research, mentoring, and training.

  • A senior member of NACAN is defined as a member who is at least 20 years post-terminal degree and has demonstrated a sustained record of substantial research, mentoring, and training.

 

2. NACAN AIE Category

2.1. Leadership/Service Awards 

This award is given to an individual who demonstrated great leadership/service and made significant contributions to the successes of NACAN at various levels. Nominees must be current NACAN members who have stayed within NACAN for at least 3 years accumulatively. The recipient will receive a certificate and a monetary award of $200.

 

2.2. Independent Investigator Research Award

This award is given to an independent investigator who has done innovative work to advance nutrition and health and is a current member of NACAN. The nominee or recipient must be willing to serve on the NACAN executive team or committee for at least 2 years after receiving the award. The recipient will receive a certificate and a monetary award of $200.

 

2.3. Young Scholar Research Award

This award is given to a trainee who demonstrates exceptional research potential, academic achievements, and contributions to their field. The nominee must be a master’s or doctoral student or postdoc and must be a current NACAN member at the time of nomination. The nominee or recipient must be willing to serve on the NACAN executive team or committee for at least 2 years after receiving the award. The recipient will receive a certificate and a monetary award of $200.
